This Privacy Policy describes how Custom Heroes ("we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, and shares your information when you visit customheroes.ai, make a book at app.customheroes.ai, or contact us.

The Short Version

• We don't sell your personal information, and we never sell your photos or stories.
• Your photos are only used to make your book. OpenAI uses them to draw your characters, and a few appear on the book's "From real life to storybook" page, so our printer, Lulu, receives those with your print files.
• Each company we work with gets only what it needs for its part of making your book. They're all listed below.
• Our AI providers don't train their models on your photos or stories under their business terms.
• You can ask us to delete everything at any time.

Information We Collect

Your Account

• Your first name, email address, and password (or your Google sign-in)
• The country you choose, which decides whether you can order a printed book

Your Books

• Your story idea, typed or dictated
• The people, pets, and things in your story: their names, roles, ages, genders, and any notes you add
• Photos you upload so we can draw your characters
• Your story, its pictures, your dedication, and any changes you make

If you dictate your story idea, your browser's built-in speech recognition turns your voice into text. Your browser's maker (for example Google in Chrome or Apple in Safari) may process the audio. We only receive the text.

Your Orders

• What you ordered, what you paid, and your shipping name and address
• Your card details are handled by Stripe. We never see or store them

• Pages visited, referring site, and browser and device type, through the analytics and advertising tools described below
• Messages you send us

How We Use Your Information

• To write, illustrate, print, and deliver your book
• To take payment and send you emails about your account and orders
• To help you when you contact us, and to fix problems
• To prevent abuse and keep AI usage within limits
• To measure which of our ads work
• To meet legal, tax, and accounting obligations

Who We Share It With

We use a small number of companies to make and deliver your book. Each gets only what it needs for its job, and none of them may use it for anything else.

We may also share information if the law requires it, or with a company that takes over Custom Heroes, which would have to keep this policy's promises.

What We Never Do

• We never sell your personal information, photos, or stories
• We never use your photos for anything but making your book
• We don't train AI on your photos or stories, and OpenAI and Anthropic don't either under their business terms, which don't allow training on what we send them
• We never put your book, photos, or story in our marketing without asking you first

When Our Team Looks at a Book

We're a small team, and we don't browse your books. We open a book, including its photos, only when we need to: to answer a question you've sent us, to fix a problem with your book, or to check your pages before they're sent to print.

Advertising and Cookies

We use:

• Essential cookies to keep you signed in and remember your country
• Plausible for website statistics. It doesn't use cookies or track you across sites
• The Meta Pixel (on both sites) and Google Ads (on customheroes.ai) to see which ads bring people to us

When you sign up or order, we tell Meta that a sign-up or purchase happened, along with a scrambled (hashed) copy of your email address and the order amount, so Meta can match it to the ad you saw. We never send Meta or Google your photos, your story, or anything about the people in your book.

You can block these tools with your browser's privacy settings or an ad blocker, and manage ads in your Meta and Google ad settings.

Children

Custom Heroes is for parents and other adults making books for children. Children shouldn't create accounts, and we don't knowingly collect information from them directly.

Information about children, including their photos, comes from the adult making the book and is used only to make it. If you're making a book with someone else's child in it, please make sure their parent or guardian is happy for you to share their photo and details.

Keeping and Deleting Your Information

We keep your account, books, and photos while you have an account, so you can read, download, and reorder your books.

To delete your information, email support@customheroes.ai from the email address on your account. We'll delete your account, books, photos, and drawings within 30 days, and let you know when it's done. We keep order records (what was bought, when, and for how much) for as long as tax and accounting law requires.

Photos you upload to our free activity sheets are sent to OpenAI to make your page and aren't stored by us.

Keeping It Safe

Everything travels over encrypted connections (HTTPS), payments go directly to Stripe, and access to our systems is limited to our team. No method of storing or sending information is completely secure, but we work hard to protect yours.

Your Rights

You can ask us to:

• Tell you what information we have about you, and send you a copy
• Correct anything that's wrong
• Delete your information
• Stop using your information for a particular purpose

Email us and we'll respond within 30 days. Depending on where you live, you may have other rights under your local law, and you can always complain to your local data protection authority.

Where Your Information Is Stored

Custom Heroes and the companies we work with are based in the United States, so your information is stored and processed there, wherever you live.

Changes to This Policy

If we change this policy, we'll update it here and change the "Last Updated" date. If a change is significant, we'll email you before it takes effect.
